Race training for Offshore Sailors
The German Sailing-Federation (DSV) together with the German Offshore Class Organisation (RVS) and
Kiel Yacht-Club (KYC) offers Go 4 Speed, a professional race-training seminar.
The Go 4 Speed seminar will have two parts, focusing first on Theory and then on Practice. The Theory
seminar will start on Saturday, 17 April 2010 with a class at the DSV premises in Hamburg. Meteorologist
Meeno Schrader (wetterwelt.de) will be talking about weather in general and with special focus on race
sailing. Germany’s top racing professional Tim Kröger together with Stefan Matschuck (NORTHSAILS
Germany) will then add their valuable insight on crew management and professional-level sail trim. Then
Professor Dr. Ing. Kai Graf from the famous Yacht Research Unit of Kiel-polytechnic will share his views on
the optimum keel, sail and hull profiles and shapes. Finally, Uwe Wenzel from RVS will explain the VPP
information and Scoring Options contained in your ORC International Certificate.
.
On Sunday, 18 April 2010 the seminar will focus on right-of-way rules and tactics, with DSV Rules Expert
Uli Finckh explaining the ISAF Racing Rules of Sailing, including changes for 2010 and the Offshore Special
Regulations.
The following weekend of 23 -25 April will be where Theory turns to Practice for the seminar participants,
with help on the water in Kiel from ELVSTRÖM SAILS and the Team behind world famous Olympic
champion Jesper Bank. ELVSTROM team members will act as coaches on board the boats and with the
experienced and professional team of Kiel Yacht-Club’s offshore race officials. Multiple starts and short
windward-leeward courses will be held, with the courses to be captured on video for a post-race analysis to
be given in the evening by the experts. On Friday afternoon, 23d of April, some boats will also have the
chance to receive a free rig-trim and checkup by the ELVSTROM experts.
On 4 September 2010 there will be another race training seminar, this one held by the organizers of the
ISAF ORC World Championship in Flensburg, northern Germany. Racing in the 2010 World Championship
will be from 5-11 September 2010.
